Moped and e-bike: what’s the difference?

Since the early 2020s, France has experienced a real boom of the electric bike. A keen interest reinforced by the assignment of a bonus bike for the purchase of such equipment, bonus subject to certain conditions to obtain it. In this rapidly expanding market, it is important to know the different equipment available and to know how to distinguish them. In fact, for many people, all bicycles equipped with a motor and battery are simply electric bicycles. However, in this family, there are two very different types of two wheels, namely the moped and the VAE or electrically assisted bicycle, also called electric bicycle. As with the VAE, the engine only starts when the cyclist is pedaling. It is therefore a pedal assistance. As soon as the cyclist stops pedaling, the engine stops and deceleration occurs. In the case of the moped, once driven, the engine runs continuously. In absolute terms, the driver can therefore complete an entire journey without giving any pedal strokes.

Much greater autonomy for the VAE

For those who want to equip themselves with an electric bicycle, the issue of battery life is an important factor to consider. At this level there is no comparison between the moped and the electrically assisted bicycle, the latter much more efficient. In fact, as indicated above, the moped engine works permanently. This obviously affects its range, most models can hardly exceed 50km before needing to be recharged. Things are very different for the VAE. Since the motor shuts down regularly, as soon as there is no more pedaling action, the battery life is much longer. The pedal assistance thus allows you to travel around 150 km, or even 180 km for the most efficient models, before the battery runs out. A great advantage that should not be underestimated.

Very different legislation between mopeds and VAE

Although they have shorter battery life, mopeds are much faster than pedelecs. They can thus reach a speed of 45 km / h, while pedal assisted bicycles are limited and cannot exceed 25 km / h. This implies that the circulation of mopeds on a cycle path is prohibited, unlike the VAE. Furthermore, the use of the moped implies the need to take out insurance, register the vehicle and wear an approved helmet. In the city, parking is also more complicated as the moped is considered a motorized two-wheeler, just like a scooter. Neither insurance nor registration is required for the electrically assisted bicycle. So, if the two models are interesting at the level of CO savings2 linked to the use of the bicyclethe VAE is more practical and functional.
