Michael Lonsdale, known for roles in, among others Moonraker in Munich, died on Monday at the age of 89. The British-French actor died in his home in Paris, reports include The world.

Lonsdale was bilingual and played over two hundred roles in French and English productions.

He became famous worldwide for his role as a villain in the James Bond film Moonraker (1979) and starred in such famous titles as The Trial (1962), The Name of the Rose (1986), The Remains of the Day (1993), Ronin (1998) in Munich (2005).

Lonsdale owes his feature film career in part to actress Marguerite Duras, who met the actor during rehearsals for a play in which he played. The meeting led to three roles in French-language films, including Destroy, she said from 1969.

He was also active as a stage director and writer and provided the voice-over for documentaries and other media productions.

In 2011 Lonsdale won a César Award for his supporting role in Of Gods and Men.
