‘Moon Strawberry’ takes place this Thursday (24); Check out tips to see the last supermoon of 2021 – Science

Lovers of astronomical events like the “supermoons” will have the opportunity to see the last of 2021 this Thursday (24). The so-called “Moon Strawberry”, although it doesn’t have much change in appearance, will get bigger because of the proximity of the astro with the planet Earth.

According to Romário Fernandes, professor of Astronomy at the College of the Fire Department of Ceará, in the state, it will appear at 5:35 pm. this will be the third full moon closest to Earth this year, behind those of May e April.

For him, the ideal is to see the full moon when it is rising, because the visual effect falls apart quickly. “The sooner, the more interesting it gets. If you let 20, 30 or 40 minutes pass, it does.”

Romário Fernandes explains that, added to the apparent size of the full moon, which stands out, the “Moon Strawberry” will draw even more attention if the person is near the horizon.

“our brain potentiates the apparent size of the full moon when we see it near buildings, trees, mountains. The visual effect gets more significant“, it indicates.

Phenomenon

According to the Astronomy professor, the exact moment of supermoon formation varies from month to month and from orbit to orbit, and it happens when the period of Full Moon coincides with the perigeu (when the Moon gets closer to Earth).

“She does a round around the Earth once in just under a month. As the orbit is elliptical, not circular, it causes monthly it stays close and far from the Planet”, he points out.

Romário Fernandes adds that, strictly speaking, only supermoons this year were those of May and April, because the Moon really came closer to the Earth. “Both in March and now in June, we’re in a category a little bit differentiated“.

Origin of the name ‘Moon of Strawberry’

Also according to the Astronomy professor, there are two versions for the origin of the name “Moon of Strawberry”: the one that arose in USA, during the cultivation of wild strawberries, which take place at this time of year, and the one that mentions the summer solstice in the North hemisphere, which took place on June 21st. “These are discussions that do not reach a consensus”.
