Those looking to get up early can enjoy the beautiful view of the waning crescent near the beautiful open star cluster known as the Pleiades. Also look for Earth’s brightness on the dark side of the moon.

On the morning of July 13 and 14, 2023, the waning crescent will pass through the Pleiades star cluster, one of the many gems in Taurus the Bull. The bright orange star Aldebaran will shine nearby. Read more about the moon near the Pleiades below. Graph via John Jardine Goss/Earthsky.

The moon near the Pleiades and Aldebaran

For everyone around the world, the waning crescent moon will be near the twinkling Pleiades star cluster on the morning of July 13 and 14, 2023. The Pleiades, shaped like a little dipper, is also called The Seven Sisters or Messier 45 (M45) . They were a true star family, born together and still moving together through space as a family. And they are great for viewing through binoculars!

Also nearby you will find a bright red star. It was Aldebaran, the fiery eyes of the Taurus Bull. Aldebaran is one of the brightest stars in our sky. It is part of the V-shaped group of stars – the Hyades – that make up the face of Taurus. In a fairly dark sky, the Hyades should be easy to spot.

Incidentally, even though Aldebaran appears among them, he is not a member of the Hyades star cluster. The fact is that it is actually much closer to us in space than any other star in the Hyades group.

When can you see them?

The moon and Taurus will rise over the eastern horizon shortly after 2 a.m. (local time). So look in the dark morning sky before it begins to shine, announcing the coming of the morning sun.

The secret of the “lost” stars.

Thuraya is also known as the Seven Sisters. However, many people can only see the six stars with their own eyes. How many stars did you see? Some keen observers have reported seeing 11 stars. Of course, you need a dark sky to see some of the fainter stars.

Through binoculars, the six stars suddenly become 30 to 70 stars. And binoculars are ideal for viewing chandeliers. The cluster is so vast that it is out of the field of view of telescopes. No matter how many stars you see, the Pleiades is a common star pattern and it’s well worth the effort to get up early in the summer to catch it and the moon.

Bottom line: Watch for the moon near the Pleiades – a beautiful open star cluster – on the morning of July 13 and 14, 2023. Nearby, you’ll find the bright star Aldebaran.
