NEW YORK / SEOUL, Sep 20 (Yonhap) – President Moon Jae-in arrived in New York (local time) on Sunday to attend the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.

He will deliver a speech on peace in Korea and Seoul’s role in addressing global challenges, including the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and the climate crisis, according to Cheong Wa Dae’s announcement.

His five-day visit to the United States, which will also take him to Hawaii for an event relating to the alliance with Washington, comes as Koreans celebrate Chuseok, one of the biggest and most important traditional festivals. It’s the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving Day in the United States.

Moon will address the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the headquarters of the international organization on Tuesday (local time).

He should ask to support the South Korean campaign for peace on the Korean Peninsula and reaffirm his commitment to contribute more to the international community.

The two Koreas are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their simultaneous membership in the United Nations this year.

Moon will attend the Sustainable Development Goals Moment (SDG Moment) event on Monday, alongside members of BTS, the world-famous K-pop boy band and Moon’s Special Envoy for “Future Generations and Culture.” The SDG Moment seeks to promote the achievement of the goals adopted in 2015 by the United Nations.

Moon will then have bilateral talks with Slovenian President Borut Pahor and Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on the sidelines of the UN session. But, Moon is not expected to meet with US President Joe Biden, according to his aides.

Moon plans to meet Albert Bourla, Chairman and CEO of Pfizer, and participate in a panel discussion on South Korea’s desire to become a global vaccine production center.

After a two-night stay in New York, the president will fly to Honolulu to witness the transfer of the remains of South Korean and American soldiers killed during the Korean War (1950-1953). He will also present medals to Korean independence activists currently residing in Hawaii.

Moon will return to Seoul on Thursday, a day after Chuseok vacation.
