A 53-year-old man was arrested in Steenbergen on Sunday morning after a mad ride through the city, including driving into the fence of the house of mayor Ruud van den Belt. Earlier that morning, the man drove ‘in a very antisocial way through Steenbergen’ and missed a police car by a hair. The mayor says in a written response that he is very shocked.
“Fortunately, the fencing saved us, we need some time to give it a place,” says mayor Ruud van den Belt. “It is also very annoying for the family of this man, they will also be shocked and have to deal with this.”
Both the officers and the mayor have filed a complaint against the man. No motive is yet known, police said. He is still in custody and an investigation is underway. “Because he showed seriously confused behavior, consultations are also taking place with health authorities,” the police said.
Police car in the verge
Around nine o’clock the police received several reports of a passenger car that was driving around in Steenbergen in a ‘very antisocial way’.
Officers rushed to see the car in question driving straight towards them. The officers were able to send their official car into the verge just in time to prevent the cars from colliding with each other.
Arrest
A little later, ‘a resident on Nassaulaan’ reported that a car had hit the entrance gate of his house, the police wrote in a press release. That resident later turned out to be the mayor of Steenbergen: Ruud van den Belt.
The driver of the car, a 53-year-old man from Steenbergen, was stopped at the mayor’s house by rushing officers. The car was leaning against the fence. Both the car and the fence sustained damage.
