Many of the symptoms of OSA appear during sleep, but can extend to waking up. According to Mayo Clinic, experiencing mood swings, such as depression or easily offended, can indicate OSA.
Although the connection with mood swings is not fully understood, research published in Journal of Sleep Research has found a link to certain chemicals in the brain.
“In previous studies, we’ve looked at structural changes in the brain due to sleep apnea, but in this study we actually found substantial differences in the two chemicals that affect how the brain works,” said lead researcher Paul Macey.
As reported Daily ExpressOn Saturday (6/2), for the study, researchers examined levels of two brain chemicals, glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid, also known as GABA.
These chemicals are found in a part of the brain called the insula. This part of the brain helps regulate signals from other brain regions to help regulate emotions, thoughts, and certain physical functions such as blood pressure and sweat.
People with sleep apnea have lower levels of GABA and very high levels of glutamate. Meanwhile GABA acts as a mood blocker, slows things down and keeps people calm. Meanwhile, glutamate has the opposite effect.
When glutamate levels are high, the brain becomes stressed and doesn’t function properly, the researchers explained. Other symptoms associated with OSA include excessive daytime drowsiness, loud snoring, episodes of stopping breathing during observed sleep, sudden waking accompanied by gasping or choking.
