Mood maker in the crisis: Our best songs of 2020

Sabrina Francis – “Still Ways to Go”

The album contains ten songs, which in their order can safely be viewed as a concept: Starting with “I’m Awake”, through “Karma Won’t Forgive You”, “Carry On”, “I Feel”, “Free”, “Run” etc. up to “Inevitable”. If you take these titles and their arrangement seriously, the following picture emerges in front of the foil of the current Corona crisis: A young, proud, self-confident woman conjures up, accuses, gives eloquent information about: soul life (“What’s inside, I really don ‘t know … “), offers defiance and hope (” I carry on … there are still ways to go “). Sabrina Francis comes from St. George’s, the capital of the Antilles state Grenada, has released her second album “I Feel” on her own and the title “Free” also signals that she is no longer just “the background singer” of Joss Stone. The music is Caribbean, who cares? Like so many other things at the moment, the videos come as a “home story” live from the studio or from the living room, but close and credibly authentic. There are no licks presented, no beauties presented. I first thought of Marie Daulne and Zap Mama, but also Sabine Kabongo or even Oumou Sangaré, who also released a new record this year. Sabrina Francis is one of the discoveries of the year for me because, despite the mood of a crisis, she can spread a spiritually charged and underfed optimism, or in one word: confidence.
