Suspended for two years (until October 18, 2025) and fined 9 thousand euros due to positive doping control for terbutalinePapu Gómez tried to defend himself against the accusations as much as possible and, according to the portal ‘Relevo’, he even involved Linda Raff, his wife, in the defense to try to escape punishment.

According to this publication, the Monza player’s defense states that the ingestion of the aforementioned substance, present in a syrup, occurred when the Argentine arrived home “with a severe cough, which is why his wife mistakenly administered a spoonful of the medicine , with the intention of calming the repeated complaints of coughing”. These allegations clearly state that “it was an unconscious ingestion induced by an error on the part of the sportsman’s wife”.

This strategy involved trying to take advantage of an article in the World Anti-Doping Code, in which it is possible to eliminate the period of suspension if it is proven that the athlete is not at fault or acted negligently, but always in the case of food or drinks. However, the CELAD agency (Spanish Anti-Doping Commission) quickly dismantled this theory, as “it was not a food or drink, but a medicine, which the footballer cannot consume without being certain”. Furthermore, CELAD is still very critical of this justification, stressing that this case reveals “an obvious lack of normal precautions required of a top-level professional sportsman”.
