The monument to Peter R. de Vries on Leidseplein will probably be built in July 2024. Mayor Femke Halsema hinted that earlier in the evening in RTL Boulevard.
It is still unclear exactly what the memorial will look like, but according to Halsema it is a large monument. “I think this can really lift the square. It’s a monument you can touch that you can walk under. I think it has lasting significance for the city.”
“The image must depict something that my father stood for,” said son Royce de Vries opposite RTL Boulevard. “I hope people take the lesson that the monument represents into their lives.”
Today it is two years ago that Peter R. de Vries, after being a guest in the Boulevard broadcast, was shot in the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat. He died in hospital nine days later.
1032 ideas
Exactly one year after the assassination attempt, it was announced that De Vries would get a monument on Leidseplein. People could send their idea to a website that the municipality had created especially for this purpose. That resulted in 1032 entries.
On November 14, De Vries’ birthday, it became clear that Rini Hurkmans will design the monument. Hurkmans is one of five artists who was allowed to show an idea to an art committee.
Today, Halsema also hinted when the monument should appear: “As it looks now, we will unveil it next July.”
