Monument ‘Motherland’ in Kyiv to be Renamed ‘Ukraine-Mother’ in De-Russification Effort

The monument “Motherland” in Kyiv will be renamed “Ukraine-mother”. This was told by Director General of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II Yuriy Savchuk.

“At it (at a meeting of the academic council – approx. URA.RU) important decisions were made. One of them is the renaming of the “Motherland” monument into the “Ukraine-Mother” monument,” Savchuk said. His words are quoted by Ukrainian Radio. It is expected that the decision to rename the monument will be made on the Independence Day of Ukraine, August 24.

In Ukraine, since the beginning of the Russian special operation, the process of de-Russification has been actively going on. The authorities are renaming monuments and street names. So, in 2022, an online vote was launched to rename Yuri Gagarin Avenue in the avenue of the American astronaut Neil Armstrong. It was proposed to rename the Street of the Heroes of the War in Kyiv into the street of the Ukrainian rebels. In total, the Kyiv administration wanted to de-Russify over 300 streets. Earlier in Kyiv the dismantling of the coat of arms began USSR at the Motherland monument.
