A new monument was inaugurated this Friday (13) at the Santa Dulce dos Pobres Sanctuary, in Largo de Roma, in honor of Sister Dulce, the first saint born in Brazil.
The ceremony, part of the program to commemorate the four years of his canonization, was promoted by the Secretariat of Tourism (Setur-BA) as a tribute to this important religious and philanthropic figure.
“This tribute to Saint Dulce is a milestone of faith and solidarity that this extraordinary woman represented for the people of Bahia and Brazil. Celebrating Sister Dulce’s canonization in the place where she dedicated her life to those in need is an act of deep reverence. Her legacy of love for others and selfless service will be a constant inspiration for all of us”, said vice-governor Geraldo Junior, present at the ceremony.
The process of Saint Dulce’s canonization began in January 2000, with the transfer of her mortal remains to the Osid headquarters in Salvador. In June 2003, the Holy See legally validated a supposed miracle associated with her and, in 2009, Pope Benedict XVI recognized her heroic virtues, granting her the title of Venerable. The beatification took place in May 2011 and, finally, in October 2019, Pope Francis proclaimed her a saint of the Catholic Church.
