CELEBRITIESHe is already eighty years old, but ‘Monty Python’ star Eric Idle still has to work for financial reasons. He has earned very little from his rich career. He reveals this on X. “I never thought that the flow of income would decrease so disastrously.”
“I don’t know why people always assume we’re inside. Financially, ‘Monty Python’ was a disaster,” says Idle. “I never thought that at this age the flow of income would decrease so disastrously. I still have to work to make ends meet, which is not easy at this age.” He was also forced to sell his house.
Together with John Cleese, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, Graham Chapman and Michael Palin, Idle formed the legendary comedy collective ‘Monty Python’. This is how the actors became known in the 1970s. Idle’s most famous film role is as Sir Robin in ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’, although he also appeared in ‘Life of Brian’. Idle also appeared in the third ‘Shrek’ film and created the medieval musical ‘Spamalot’, which won a prestigious Tony Award.
Despite the success of ‘Monty Python’, Idle has very little left from that period. According to him, this has to do with poor management. The collective was managed by his former colleague Terry Gilliam and his daughter. “One Gilliam is bad enough,” says the actor. “Two can destroy an entire company.”

Yet he is not sad about the lack of money. “I don’t mind not being rich,” Idle writes. “I prefer to be funny.” Things are going well for the actor and comedian, who is currently working on a script for a film adaptation of the well-known ‘Monty Python’ musical ‘Spamalot’. “I’m engaged and writing again. That’s what I like most: creating a new performance. I’ve been doing it since 1963 and it feels great.”
