The equality You can search and fight in many ways, one of them is music. For centuries, music and art have served as a form of vindication, evoking with it an infallible weapon that cannot be silenced so easily.
Example of this is Montse Delgado, an artist from Malaga who began singing almost at the same time as speaking and has always been clear that the feminist struggle is also fought from the musical sphere. «Everyone knows the influence that music has in giving visibility to the relationships between genders. With music you can raise and question relationships and inequalities,” shares the singer, who affirms that “there are still many barriers to break.”
That wild soul accompanies Montse from a very young age, whose childhood was spent singing and dreaming of being one of the great artists who always accompanied her in the background of her games and whom she took as references in her own struggle. «Among my references are all the greats of the copla, such as Concha Piquer, Rocío Jurado or mi paisaan the Girl of Antequera he adds, highlighting the important role they played in opening the doors to the great folkloric bands of the time.
And she herself She has been a victim of the prejudices and social pressure that women face in the world of music.. «Like any woman in any job, prejudices and social pressure to do what we dream of are much greater on us than on men. “I myself suffered a break in my career when I decided to start a family and have children.”
Now, this Alameda artist continues the legacy of the great women of song through ‘With a woman’s name’, a musical conference with which, through fragments of couplets, the customs of different eras and the images that women transmit are addressed, taking a tour of the voice “told and sung.” «With a woman’s name, she was born in full confinement and that is why it was difficult for her to start. It was in 2021 when city councils and associations echoed the idea to include it in the activities where women are the main protagonist and little by little it is having a great reception.
Through this project, this inveterate lover of couplet and the spanish song aims to raise awareness among citizens about the role of women in the world of song and everything that lies behind a verse, giving visibility to all the artists who, like her, have had to overcome double obstacles to achieve their goals for the simple fact of being a woman.
«I am a rural woman and I have materialized this work only with the help of my effort, perseverance and total dedication to music. “My work is my true dream,” Montse confesses proudly.
This interactive, educational and emotional initiative has already reached different provinces of Andalusia and during the month of March, coinciding with International Women’s Day, it will visit other towns in the community: on March 8 in Alcaucin (Málaga), on the 9th Montalban (Córdoba), on the 10th it will stop at Villanueva del Rosario (Málaga), the 12th in Montilla (Córdoba) and on March 16 it will reach Mollina (Málaga).
«With a woman’s name it talks about the history of the copla, but also the history of life and music, making the public a protagonist and participant throughout the entire activity. It is a unique experience that awakens everyone who knows it, a project that I have put all my effort into and that will not disappoint anyone,” explains its creator, who invites anyone who wants to spend a “unique and special” sharing and learning about music and women.
