Montrose Campus Welcomes New Director

Long-time faculty member Steve Metheny begins new role

Colorado Mesa University’s Montrose campus has a new campus director, Steve Metheny, but Metheny is not new to the university or to the Montrose community.

“I came to Montrose with my family from New Mexico in 1981 to start in a small town,” Metheny said. “As soon as I got here, I decided to go ahead and expand my education.”

He received his master’s degree in engineering from what was then the Montrose Higher Education Center. Metheny then started teaching at CMU in 1991. He has taught computer science, business, and math courses on both Montrose and the main campus.

He brings not only classroom knowledge to his new role, but also work experience – everything from directing power and management services at the Delta-Montrose Electric Association to being heavily involved in a variety of organizations, including the National Society of Professional Engineers, Professional Engineers of Colorado, and the Association of Energy Engineers.

One of Metheny’s strongest traits may be his connection with the city of Montrose and the relationships he has built over the years.

“Working with the community helps us determine what programs we need to have to meet employers’ needs,” he said. “I really want to expand on what has already been done. The people before me did a great job ensuring that the Montrose campus meets local needs, but is also parallel and in line with the main vision and mission of the CMU. “

Metheny will continue to support the Montrose campus students through community relationships and coordination with key campus services and support. He is particularly looking forward to celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Montrose Campus this year.

“We have a great relationship with the city of Montrose and they welcomed us to be part of downtown, which is wonderful. We are so excited about the number of people coming here and we look forward to what lies ahead, ”said Metheny.
