“Montreal tops list of French summer travel destinations”

The French do not intend to miss their annual vacation this summer. According to a Liligo study in collaboration with OpinionWay that relays Air Journal, this year, 62% of French people intend to leave, two points more than last year. More than two thirds of them will leave for France, a stable figure, but 44% indicate their intention to travel abroad, when more than half even plan to leave several times. “Proof that the pandemic is no longer just a bad memory and no longer prevents travelers from leaving so much,” rejoices Guillaume Rostand, spokesperson for Liligo. But where will they go?

Regarding foreign countries, one city takes first place for the second consecutive year: Montreal. The Canadian city is popular with a large majority of travelers, but to get there you will have to pay an average of €724 for a round trip, per person. It is obviously much more expensive than the second foreign city in this ranking, which is Lisbon, where it takes an average of €162 for a round trip. The Portuguese capital is also ahead of its neighbor Porto (the prices are almost equivalent) as well as Marrakech (count 281 €) but especially New York (647 €), Athens (278 €) and Bangkok where the prices explode: 1,079 € per round trip !

The French plan to spend more

The French are also attracted by France but mainly to find the sun: Ajaccio, where it takes more than 200 € to get there, but also Bastia or Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe. The West Indies where fares have continued to explode since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic: it takes €1,063 to travel there this summer. For the spokesperson for Liligo, the new first place in Montreal shows how much the French “want to escape several thousand kilometers from their home”.

If the prices are too expensive for some French people, nearly three quarters have planned to use their car to travel. This is a little less than last year, and the train is gaining customers since the environmental cause seems to be one of the concerns for 37% of those questioned. This study also highlights that, even if inflation has an impact on the holiday budget of the French, the latter are not ready to give it up and even intend to spend more than last year: on average €1,124 per person. “The French are giving themselves the means to”, analyzes Guillaume Rostand.
