During an impromptu intervention, Ms. Plante described the current strike as “a women’s strike,” adding that the workers concerned worked in “absolutely essential” services.
“Of course, there are men in the health sector and in the education system and we welcome that. But the fact remains that many women occupy these more traditionally feminine environments,” she stressed.
The mayor mentioned that the effects of the strike were especially felt in the metropolis, where there are the most workers.
“My thoughts today are for those who want to have the best possible conditions to ensure the well-being and quality of life of our little ones, our middle ones, our adults and of course our elders when we talk about education and the health network.”
-Valérie Plante, mayor of Montreal
Ms. Plante specified that at the height of the strike, 600,000 workers, or 8% of the population of Quebec, had walked out.
The mayor concluded her speech by wishing all the workers concerned a happy holiday season, but, above all, a rapid conclusion to the current negotiations.
The leader of the official opposition to the City of Montreal, Aref Salem, added his voice to that of the mayor.
