Montpellier will be the first French city to welcome the “ruthless” new turret radars

A new radar specific to the urban environment will be deployed in the town centers of the territory. Making it possible to control 126 vehicles simultaneously and to sanction in particular the crossing of red lights, the first devices will be tested in Montpellier in the coming weeks.

Urban motorists will soon come across new speed cameras on their route. Just approved, the MESTAcompact will be tested in Montpellier in the coming weeks with four devices, before being deployed in city centers in the south of France, reports Car radars. And they will be ruthless with the drivers.

A discreet radar

This radar is a miniaturized version of a turret radar which has the ability to be attached to street furniture, discreetly. Several color variations are planned so that it can go unnoticed. Posted to the right, to the left of the road, or on the central reservation, it has the ability to control the speed of vehicles but also the crossing of red lights.

Equipped with a 24 GHz Doppler antenna, this radar is capable of controlling 126 vehicles simultaneously over a long range, more than 100 meters, and on axes with up to 5 lanes. A little short for the portion of the A9, but sufficient for the rest of the Hérault prefecture.

85.6 million euros

Embedded in the measurement module, an infrared sensor can identify five types of vehicles (car, utility, two-wheeler, bus and truck). Equipped with 8 to 35 mm objectives, three camera sensors allow the reading of license plates and the entire scene, precise Radars-auto.

The first MESTAcompact should not flash before the end of the year, or even the beginning of 2022. But it is better to get used to these mini-turrets, because the State has signed a public contract until 2030. In the south of the France, the company Idemia will take care of their design, for 85.6 million euros.
