Ecolothèque from Montpellier Mediterranean Metropolis integrated the global coalition United for Biodiversity and thus joins more than 300 organizations, museums, aquariums, zoos, research centers, universities, botanical parks, national parks and protected areas in 49 countries.
France, with 39 institutions, is currently the best represented country in the coalition. By signing the Coalition’s charter, the Ecolothèque adds its voice for nature, calling on everyone to act, and invites all their partners to join the movement.
Preserving biodiversity
Created at the initiative of the European Commission, the global coalition #United forBiodiversity aims to reach public opinion, as widely as possible, in order to encourage decision-makers to act and to carry out ever more concrete actions in favor of preservation of biodiversity.
The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) report estimates that around 1 million species are now threatened with extinction in the coming decades. The actions of mobilization, protection, education are more than important to make the decision-makers and the general public react.
In view of the 15th conference of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 15) which will take place in China in October 2021, the European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginijus Sinkevicius, has launched a major communication campaign to ” call on all stakeholders in biodiversity conservation to mobilize and educate the general public on this major issue.
The Ecolothèque, an actor in environmental education
The Ecolothèque, an establishment in Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, is a center for education in the environment and sustainable development. Its educational area covers 4ha cultivated in agroecology. Orchard, gardens, parks, hedges, domestic and wild animals allow the development of educational programs. The agroecological approach adopted aims to encourage living beings to “learn” to defend themselves against attacks (viruses, parasites, etc.) without resorting to chemicals (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers). The relationships of the plant or animal with its environment are thus favored. The domain is labeled Eco-Jardin.
On this exceptional playground and experimentation, the Ecolothèque welcomes children and their companions during school time (classes) and out-of-school (leisure activities), as well as children welcomed in medical-social centers and crèches . In partnership with the National Education, the Ecolothèque has been implementing for 30 years an original pedagogy allowing a fun and scientific discovery of our environment. Its main mission is to educate different audiences about life sciences and environmental issues: water and waste management, biodiversity, renewable energies, respect for flora and fauna, etc.
Its educational tools – tested and approved by children – are downloadable for free from the Pedagotheque : parents, teachers, animators can thus choose among 120 teaching sequences those which correspond to the format, to the duration and of course to the target theme.
Planet Ocean Montpellier has also joined the movement. More info on this here. –
