Saturday March 13, Michaël Delafosse, mayor and president of Montpellier Mediterranean Metropolis, Boris Bellanger, Deputy Mayor for the central district and Historical Heritage, Stéphane Jouault, Deputy Mayor and Delegate for Nature in the City and Biodiversity and Philippe Augé, President of the University of Montpellier, inaugurated renovation works of wall of the Jardin des Plantes.
Important works and a plaque
This retaining wall, located in the historic center of Montpellier, supports Boulevard Henri IV over 200 meters as well as Rue du Faubourg Saint-Jaumes over 120 meters. It is the subject of two protections: it is classified as a historical monument, it is also a registered site. Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole has therefore undertaken renovation works, which amounted to € 194,743.79, in order to preserve this wall, which bears two centuries of history.
This event was also the occasion to unveil the plaque in tribute to Baptiste Arlès, tanner worker born in Saint-Affrique in Aveyron, in 1822 and fatally struck by a stray bullet on December 17, 1851 on the sidelines of the unrest that agitated Montpellier after the coup d’etat of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte. A cross was engraved in his memory on the now rehabilitated wall.
