The Garden of the Senses in the former mansion Richer de Belleval, on the Place de la Canourgue, in the district of the prefecture in Montpellier, will open its bistronomic restaurant to gourmets and gourmands, Tuesday July 6. The private inauguration, in the presence in particular of artists and decorators, including Christian Collot who participated in the “resurrection” of this old building threatened with collapse, took place this Friday evening, before a “testing” operation, this Saturday, reserved for handpicked guests. The Pourcel and company know how to do things big.
Wooden deck
Associated with the GGL-Helenis group, the cooking twins Jacques and Laurent Pourcel, as well as Olivier Château had the common will to create, “the destination that everyone is talking about, because Montpellier deserves it”, we read on the page Facebook. And obviously, we have not finished hearing about the Jardin des Sens, where is now installed a hard outdoor terrace : this wooden platform is fixed to the ground, covering the paving stones of the Place de la Canourgue. The operators have received authorization from the City of Montpellier for this terrace leaning against the facade of the building.
“An economic powerhouse”
“The Pourcel and their associates in this adventure want Montpellier to retain its place as gastronomic city in the same way as Bordeaux or Lyon, and that Montpellier is identifiable among the French destinations where one of the reasons to go to the city is the quality of its tables. They want “Le jardin des Sens – Hôtel Richer de Belleval” to become an economic powerhouse for the heart of the old town. In a way, we want to create a new place to live and share. A minimum of 2 star cuisine will be offered to customers, ”explains one of the partners.
The former starred establishment Le Jardin des Sens, located on avenue Saint-Lazare, closed its doors in March 2016. It had obtained up to 3 stars in the Michelin Guide.
In the Ecusson, in Montpellier, the entire establishment will include, in addition to this bistronomic restaurant, a 5-star luxury hotel, with 20 luxury rooms. “This will make it one of the most luxurious hotels in Montpellier and the region,” assures the staff of the Jardin des Sens.
More than two years of work
In total, more than two years of work were necessary in this building dating from the 17th century which was falling into ruin, after having housed a town hall annex and the commercial court. Frescoes, frames, paintings, but also sumptuous sculptures have been renovated. New spaces have been fitted out, as well as accesses for firefighters and emergency vehicles, in the event of fire and accident.
The decorator Christian Collot who participated in the restoration of this place, and who is one of the guests at the private inauguration this Friday evening, has already produced the decoration and layout of #Terminal 1, on the road to the sea, in Montpellier.

Launched on the rails, the Jardin des Sens locomotive which will spice up the daily life of La Canourgue will be rolling this Friday evening, before finding its cruising speed on July 6.
