The Town Hall of Montpellier forces night grocery stores to close from Thursday evening to Monday morning for reasons of public tranquility and hygiene. A similar decision was taken last year.
The decision is radical. Montpellier grocery stores must lower the curtain from Thursday evening until Monday morning. This decision taken by the municipality concerns all establishments “offering the take-out sale of drinks, in particular alcoholic drinks”.
For public tranquility and hygiene
Montpellier’s night grocery stores must close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., from Thursday to Sunday inclusive, from June 1 to September 30 2023. Seven sectors of the city are concerned, particularly in the Écusson.
“This decision by the Mayor of Montpellier, taken within the framework of his police powers, stems from a desire to safeguard public tranquility and the hygiene of the streets of Montpellier », specifies the municipality.
An identical decision was taken last year by the municipality of Montpellier. Seven traders had seized the administrative court to cancel it. But their approach did not have the expected result.
