Montpellier Community Pays Tribute to Marie-Pierre, Victim of Femicide

More than a hundred people gathered in the evening of February 21 at the site where Marie-Pierre was shot in the head the day before in Montpellier.

A shock wave spread through Montpellier after the femicide, Tuesday February 20, in front of the court. Marie-Pierre, 66, was shot in the head at close range by her ex-husband. He was waiting for her, armed, in front of the court where they had an appointment with the family judge to settle their divorce in property matters. Flowers were placed in front of the gates of the judicial city and around 150 people gathered on Wednesday evening at Place Pierre-Flotte.

“Femmage” to Marie-Pierre, 66 years old, killed by her ex-husband

Fatma Nakib, elected in charge of equality and women’s rights, was present at this “femmage” (tribute to a woman) organized by the local branch of Dare to Feminism. “It’s extremely shocking. With all these weapons in circulation, it’s too easy, denounces the elected official. What saddens me is that we hear a lot from politicians and legislators on the subject but in reality nothing changes.” The advisor, who was part of a delegation from the Region to the Basque Country a month ago to study the care of victims of domestic violence, was able to see the radical development in Spain. “Since the 2004 law, feminicides have fallen. Only one in 2023 in the Spanish Basque Country when there were 200. The handling of complaints and the protection of people have changed.” She continues: “For a man to refuse the sharing of heritage when we are under the regime of the community, in itself, is violence. The question to ask is: what makes a man shoot a woman in the street?

“Always the same scenario with a crime of macho possession”

A question shared by Sonia Salami, president of Dare to Feminism 34. “It’s always the same scenario with a crime of macho possession. The difference is that male violence usually occurs in private, it’s rare in a public place. This raises awareness of this absolute misogyny just a statistic.” In addition to the three billion demanded by feminist associations to strengthen public services (police justice), a real framework law is expected “to treat the subject globally as in Spain in 2004”.

“A brutal reminder of the reality of violence against women”

An opinion shared by Flora Labourier, opposition MP from Mupes and lawyer at the Montpellier bar: “I feel deeply concerned by this tragedy. This femicide is a brutal reminder of the reality of violence against women that persists in our society. We must act collectively to put an end to this senseless violence. It is our duty to create an environment where women are and feel safe and protected. We must do everything in our power to prevent such acts and support victims.” All call for reports to end the complicit silence.
