Month of Night: Grenoble Metropolis Aims to Reduce Light Pollution and Energy Consumption

The 3rd edition of Month of Night will take place throughout the month of October in several territories of theIsère and particularly in the Grenoble metropolis.

The Grenoble Metropolis wants to increase the number of light points turned off during the night by 10 to 25%

The opportunity to present its ambitions in terms of reduction from light pollution and some energy consumption linked to public lighting defined since 2020. The Metropolis thus wants reduce the energy consumption of public lighting on its territory 60 %. She also wishes increase of 10 to 25% number of light points off during the night and reduce the power of the remaining light points. The Metropolis finally wants to apply specific recommendations for the protection of biodiversity in all natural, agricultural and forestry areas, i.e. 20% of the Metropolis’ public lighting heritage.

The institution recommends no longer extending the illuminated areas and removing lighting deemed unnecessary; to use equipment “adapted, efficient and controllable” for fair lighting and to generalize and harmonize extinguishing and intensity variation devices.

24 municipalities signatories to the charter of commitment to renew their public lighting installations

24 communes of the Metropolis signed the charter commitment to renew their public lighting installations. These are: Bresson, Champagnier, Claix, Eybens, Fontaine, Gières, Grenoble, Herbeys, Jarrie, Meylan, Noyarey, Poisat, Pont-de-Claix, Proveysieux, Quaix-en-Chartreuse, La Tronche, Saint-Barthélémy -de-Séchilienne, Saint-Egrève, Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux, Sarcenas, Seyssins, Vaulnaveys-le-Haut, Varces-Alllières-et-Risset and Veurey-Voroize. They represent 44,000 light pointsout of a total of 67,000 across the Metropolis.

“From 2025, the actions implemented in these 24 municipalities will save 7,600 MWh per year, or 1.15 million euros. And in 2035, these figures will rise to 10,900 MWh and between 1.4 and 2 .2 million euros in savings.”

The metropolitan service supporting municipalities in the management and renovation of their lighting currently works with 15 municipalities (7,200 light points). There will be 18 (13,700 light points) from January 1, 2024.

Webinars to raise awareness among businesses, businesses and co-owners

Finally, Grenoble Alpes Métropole wants to act on the private lighting fleet. This is the whole aim of the awareness operations which are put in place as part of the Month of the Night. Three webinars are scheduled: Monday October 2 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. and Monday October 9 from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. to shops, Tuesday October 3 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Thursday October 5 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. for companies et, Tuesday October 3 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for condominiums et housing estates.
