Montessori College Gaillac: A Unique Center of Studies and Work in the Tarn

the essential This college, opened last year rue des Chalets, extends the primary school. The workforce of 16 registered includes some internal Tarn.

This will be the second return to school for the Montessori college, the only one of its kind in the Tarn, in a house with a garden on rue des Chalets. The establishment also renounces this name “college”, advanced last year to make itself known without disorienting the public, and returns to the official Montessori nomenclature “Center of studies and work” or to that used internally. of “community”.

The opening took place on September 4 with 16 students and three teachers: Myriam Seydoux, director, will be in charge of the language disciplines. It was she who launched and developed the Montessori project in Gaillac, in primary and then secondary education, the latter on four levels. This “teen program” emphasizes community work, the sharing of ideas and cooperation “more effective than individual work”.

This conviction, Matteo Cassoret will put it into practice in mathematics and scientific teaching, for example in the development of the garden. This former economics student recalls the community’s goal: to get as close as possible to self-sufficiency. “For that, you have to produce food, the garden is there for that. But we also study photosynthesis, the nitrogen cycle, the links between plants. Intellectual learning is linked to practices.”

The highlighted experience

The Montessori spirit must prepare the student for life in society, confront the community with the outside world. This social experience could lead to selling some surpluses, to putting teenagers in contact with customers. Myriam Seydoux is considering the possibility of a small market per month, accompanied by a coffee or a chocolate with customers or people from the neighborhood.

Chelsea Moulton, a young American from Georgia, will immerse the community in total English to address cultural issues such as in practical life, in the daily activities of the kitchen, the garden, the chicken coop, the maintenance of the home and of oneself. Beatriz Paniaga Saez will intervene as last year on the Spanish sequences.

The Center for Studies and Works accommodates three interns from Tarn: the house is large enough for three more. There is no shortage of projects, such as Matteo’s, around a film photo lab and experiments with light. The Montessori team approaches this new school year in a spirit of confidence and enthusiasm (tel.06 46 82 52 36 or www.collegemontessorigaillac.com).
