Our tour starts on the western outskirts of the tranquil village of Ye. There is parking at the church (on the left!), and the hiking trail towards Monte Corona begins from here. The path initially winds through vineyards and then becomes increasingly steeper. However, there are no technical difficulties (easy hiking trail, T2).
After about 30 minutes you will reach the crater rim and enjoy the spectacular view of the crater. The designated hiking trails also end here – most hikers will probably turn back here. But we still want to climb the upper crater rim and the (main) summit of Monte Corona (as is also described in the compass hiking guide). Unfortunately, we are disappointed here. The climb to the main peak is blocked (several signs). Only the north summit on the right is allowed to be climbed.
So we turn – somewhat disappointedly – to this very thing. The climb is actually quite nice. You climb over a small wall on an initially clear path and then climb – now much steeper – up the slope. A first Ier position could be bypassed (but of course we don’t do that). Shortly before the north summit, however, you definitely have to put your hand on the rock (I). From the North summit of Monte Corona (according to the altimeter 601 m) we have a fantastic view of the vastness of the ocean and the surrounding lava fields. La Graciosa Island and the Chinijo Archipelago are visible in the distance. The slippery lava scree is a bit challenging on the descent (points T3+/T4-). The way back from the crater rim then follows the same path as the ascent.
