Montauban: Six young people in Universal National Service among firefighters

They are called Emma, Pauline, Clémence, Alban, Rodrigue or Gauthier and are domiciled in Nègrepelisse, Monteils, Montauban, Saint-Arroumex or Durfort-Lacapelette. But above all, they share one thing in common: these six Tarn-et-Garonnais are the pioneers of the Universal National Service (SNU) in the department. Friday afternoon, they received a visit from the director of the cabinet of the prefect of Tarn-et-Garonne, Bernard Burckel, and the first vice-president of the departmental council, Pierre Mardegan, during their last day of general interest mission (MIG) of said SNU to the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) of Tarn-et-Garonne.

For these six young people, their motivation is more or less the same: all are attracted to the security and law enforcement professions. One wants to become a police officer, another professional firefighter, a third to join the Navy. And all of them finally accepted an internship at two rescue centers in Tarn-et-Garonne.

Four were welcomed in Montauban, two in Castelsarrasin. “It allowed us to see behind the scenes and the missions apart from the interventions” summarizes Emma. “You have been able to discover a very particular structure of professions, which have a social role in addition to their primary rescue task. I congratulate you on your voluntary approach which, I hope, will tempt your friends to become involved in the SNU as well. “, launched them Bernard Burckel, big smile under his mask of rigor.

A voluntary SNU … then mandatory in 2022

Colonel Théron, head of the department’s firefighters, also made a point of greeting the six young people and saw in their MIG a golden opportunity to recruit. “You have been particularly attentive during these eight days. We will meet you for another four days in October. And if the experience pleases you, you can obviously get involved as volunteer firefighters in the barracks of your municipality”, smiled -he, before giving them a bag of gifts in the colors of the Tarn-et-Garonnais firefighters.

After this general interest mission where they successfully obtained their first aid diploma (PSC1), the six volunteers will participate next year (health crisis requires) in a cohesion stay in another department of France. A schedule obviously upset by the Covid-19. The SNU, which was supposed to be mandatory from 2021, has been postponed to 2022.
