Montauban. Relaxed by justice, Brigitte Barèges symbolically receives the keys to the city

She arrived to cheers from the audience. A few hours after the Court of Appeal of Toulouse milk relaxed in the case of embezzlement of public funds, for which she had been convicted at first instance last February, it was to a shower of applause that Brigitte Bareges entered the room town hall of Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne), where she held a press conference this Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at the end of the day.

Relaxed by the Court of Appeal

At the start of the afternoon, Brigitte Barèges was acquitted by the Toulouse Court of Appeal of the facts of embezzlement of which she was accused. In the first place, the mayor of Montauban had been sentenced to twelve months in prison suspended, a fine of 15,000 euros and a five-year sentence of ineligibility. She was then forced to resign from her mandates as mayor, president of the Greater Montauban agglomeration community and departmental councilor of the Tarn-et-Garonne.

His relatives quit

It is therefore very symbolically thatAxel de Labriollehis first deputy who had taken his place in the mayor’s chair after his conviction, handed him the keys to Montauban, thus marking back to business by Brigitte Bareges.

The three relatives who had replaced her at the City, the urban community and the waste union, all resigned from their positions.

She wants to be mayor again before Christmas

Brigitte Barèges has expressed her wish to become mayor of Montauban “before Christmas”. After the decision of Toulouse Court of Appealthe public prosecutor’s office can still appeal to the Court of Cassation, but the procedure is not suspensive.

“I am delighted to become mayor of small and large projects again,” said Brigitte Barèges, adding that she came out “bruised” from this episode, which aroused in her “a feeling of frustration and dispossession”.

First elected in 2011

“If the court had condemned me, I would have wanted to stop everything,” she told the assembly gathered at the town hall on Tuesday. Brigitte Barèges also had a few words for ” the Montalbanais who trusted us four times and therefore considered that I was not dishonest”. She was elected mayor of the city of Ingres for the first time in 2011.
