The ceremony of tribute to the dead for France during the war in Algeria and the fighting in Morocco and Tunisia was held in Cours Foucault yesterday, in the presence of Catherine Fourcherot, sub-prefect of the district of Montauban, elected officials, military representatives, veterans, flag bearers and families.
The message from Geneviève Darrieussecq, Minister Delegate in charge of Memory and Veterans Affairs, was read: “France knows the pain of former harkis who were forced to leave their native land and were unworthily welcomed in mainland France. We are working to recognition and reparation. Together, we contribute to transmitting, to explaining this painful past, to recognizing the faults that have been committed. Thus, the 60th anniversary of the year 1962 will be that of dialogue and appeasement between the different memories of the Algerian war”. Wreaths were then laid at the foot of the war memorial.
