Monsignor Expresses Concern About Nuclear Power Plants in Iran, North Korea, and Ukraine at International Atomic Energy Agency General Assembly

Monsignor Pacho attended the International Atomic Energy Agency General Assembly and spoke, expressing concern about the situation of nuclear power plants in Iran, North Korea and Ukraine.

(Vatican News) The Holy See firmly believes that “a world without nuclear weapons is both necessary and possible.” Monsignor Daniel Pacho, Under-Secretary-General for Multilateral Affairs of the Holy See’s Department of State for Relations with States and International Organizations, said this at the 67th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Holy See representative discussed the situation in Iran, North Korea and Ukraine at the meeting. The Holy See deeply regrets that Tehran “has stopped implementing the commitments it made in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action two years ago, seriously jeopardizing the verification and monitoring work of the IAEA” and encourages “the continued efforts of the IAEA in matters concerning Iran” .

Then, Monsignor Pacho turned his attention to East Asia. He expressed the Holy See’s appreciation for “the international community’s sustained and patient efforts to restart negotiations on the nuclear program of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”. This nuclear program “poses a threat to the integrity of the nuclear non-proliferation regime.”

Turning to Ukraine, the Holy See Undersecretary reiterated the need to “ensure the safety of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant”. “Never before has a country with such an important nuclear energy program been the target of a military attack. Before that, nuclear power plants had never been in danger of being destroyed by military action. Before that, the IAEA had never had to deploy experts. Teams continue to conduct supervisory work, taking such high risks, or being forced to work in such dangerous conditions.” Mgr Pacho hopes that “significant changes can take place even in this unprecedented situation”.

The Holy See representative concluded by calling on the countries of the world to remember that they have “the moral responsibility to lay the political and economic foundations for peace, in order to sustain the development of all humanity and the sincere hopes of all peoples, with human dignity and the public interest at its core.”
