Right from the start, the well-known literary critic Jean-Michel Rouche (Fabrice Luchini) had an evil suspicion. A novel appears, excellently written by the audience, but it comes from an already deceased author, a certain Henri Pick, who has never heard of anything in the literary scene. No wonder, Pick was a simple pizza maker in Brittany, whom his wife never saw or read.
Literature operation on the test bench
For Rouche it is clear: a fake! The literary critic becomes a detective who has to find evidence and, in doing so, gets into a rather childish obsession. However, the search for truth is particularly suitable for penetrating the mechanisms of the literary scene, in which powerful and sarcastic critics decide on literary fates, thereby also developing inflated egos and various vanities.
You will learn a lot about editors who do not always have the right feeling when they reject books, about publishers who deliberately cross marketing boundaries in their longing for the next bestseller, about reading circles with a quirky factor.
Romantic nuances
In Joséphine (Camille Cotton), the daughter of Henri Pick, Rouche unexpectedly finds an accomplice in his research, so more than just sympathy develops. He wanted to pack several genres into his film in a playful way, says director Remi Bezancon, “from thriller to romantic comedy”.
Enjoy the lie
What is being and what is only appearance? The film “The Secret Novel of Monsieur Pick” moves in an all too well-known area of tension: ironic and light-footed, yet not lightweight, and with a main character on the way to character improvement. And the truth? Not so important, because lying is fun here anyway!
