Monsanto also appealed to pay compensation to cancer patient who used Roundup

Chemical company Monsanto is ordered by a US judge to pay $25 million in damages to a retiree who attributes his cancer to the herbicide Roundup. The company lost its appeal against a previous ruling.

Bayer, the parent company of Monsanto, denies that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, causes cancer and insists that the product is safe. The compensation imposed is lower than the 80 million dollars that the judge ordered in 2019 to be.

As is customary, the U.S. Supreme Court failed to substantiate the decision. This could have serious consequences for the group, which looks up to more than 30,000 similar complaints. The Bayer group has said it has set aside an additional $4.5 billion to deal with new litigation over the next 15 years.

“We cannot understand the Supreme Court’s rejection of the Hardeman case,” Bayer said in a statement. In its statement, the group said it “will continue to strive for an illuminating glyphosate ruling at the highest judicial level in the US.”
