Monkeypox: “WHO is considering declaring it a health emergency again”. What’s up

The World Health Organization (WHO) may assess whether it is necessary to declare Mpox, or “Monkeypox”, an international health emergency again, following the latest epidemiological developments in Africa that are causing concern.

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tells us about the intentions of the UN health organization: «I am considering calling an Emergency Committee», the expected expert committee of the IHR (International Health Regulations ), “to advise me on whether the Mpox epidemic should be declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC)”.

A little more than a year has passed since, in May 2023, the WHO declared the end of the Mpox crisis declared in July 2022, after the virus began to spread globally and in Europe .

DG Tedros could now ask the experts for an opinion on the need to raise the alert level again: “Although a more lethal strain of Mpox is spreading in several African countries – explained a few days ago on X – the WHO, the African Centers for disease control and prevention, local governments and partners” in the field are “further strengthening the response” with the aim of “preventing the spread of the disease. But it is necessary on increased funding and support for a comprehensive response.” Hence DG WHO’s assessments of the Pec node.
