Monkeypox Reaches 1,000 Cases, Here’s WHO’s Response

Jakarta

There are more than 1,000 cases of monkeypox reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) in non-endemic countries. Since May, 29 countries outside African countries have reported cases of monkeypox. There have been no reports of deaths to date in these countries.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the risk of monkeypox becoming really growing in non-endemic countries but still preventable at this point. He also regrets that the international community has only started paying attention to monkeypox since the cases emerged in developed countries.

“Unfortunately a reflection of the world we live in today is that the international community has only paid attention to monkeypox because it has emerged in high-income countries,” he told a news conference, quoted by Reuters on Thursday (9/6/2022).

At the press conference, Tedros also said there have been more than 1,400 suspected cases of monkeypox this year in Africa and there have been reports of 66 deaths.

He also stated that in several countries, monkeypox is thought to be spread through community transmission. WHO recommends people with monkeypox to isolate at home.
