Monkeypox Outbreak in Jakarta: 10 Positive Cases Linked to Sexual Contact

Jakarta

The DKI Jakarta Health Service (Dinkes) said that currently there are 10 positive cases cpickled monkey or monkerpox. The 10 positive cases were infected from sexual contact.

“So far 10 positive cases in DKI Jakarta, all transmitted through sexual contact,” said Head of the Surveillance, Epidemiology and Immunization Section of the DKI Jakarta Health Service, Ngabila Salama, when contacted, Tuesday (24/10/2023).

Ngabila said that monkerpox is transmitted most quickly through unhealthy sexual relations. Meanwhile, transmission via droplets, such as the Corona virus (COVID-19), tends to be small.

“Rapid transmission occurs during risky sexual contact that is not safe, healthy and clean. This means having unprotected contact or being sick, for example having a fever or water-filled blisters or sores on the body’s skin or genitals,” said Ngabila.

“The risk of transmission from droplets, for example from an environment contaminated with phlegm, saliva, body fluids, namely on eating utensils, bathing utensils, sleeping utensils, is small, only around 20 percent. Meanwhile, transmission from skin-to-skin lesions is around 50 percent. But sexual contact can be 90 percent. 100 percent because it goes straight into the blood mucosa,” he said.

According to Ngabila, to reach vulnerable and closed groups, the Health Department coordinates with various groups.

“Coordinating with various parties, including the health ministry, the private sector and assistance groups,” he said.

The DKI Jakarta Health Office previously updated data on findings of monkey pox cases. Currently, 10 positive cases of monkey pox have been found in Jakarta.

“Monkeypox DKI Jakarta update as of October 24 2023 at 10.00 WIB. Total positive cases are 10 people,” said Ngabila.

Ngabila explained that as many as nine monkey pox patients were undergoing treatment at the hospital. Meanwhile, one other case has been declared cured.

The first positive case of mpox was discovered in Jakarta in August 2022. On 13 October 2023 there was an increase of one case, on 19 October 2023 an increase of one case, on 21 October 2023 an increase of 5 cases and on 23 October 2023 an increase of 2 positive cases.
