Indeed, some local health officials have given up hope of much from contact tracing. However, there are other reasons to be optimistic, one of which is that the US government already has a vaccine.
A two-dose regimen called Jynneos was licensed in the US in 2019 and recommended last year as a tool against monkeypox.
When the outbreak was first identified in May, US officials only had about 2,000 doses available. The government distributes them but limits injections to people identified through public health investigations as people who have recently been exposed to the virus.
Late last month, as more doses became available, the CDC began recommending that the shot be given to those who self-aware that they may have been infected.
Demand has provided more supply, but clinics in several cities are quickly running out of doses of the vaccine and health officials across the country say they don’t have enough doses.
That situation changed until this week, Walensky said. The government has distributed more than 191,000 doses, and there are 160,000 more ready to ship. A total of 780,000 doses will be available as early as next week.
Once current demand is met, the government will consider expanding vaccination efforts. The CDC believes that 1.5 million US men are considered at high risk for infection.
Testing has also been expanded. More than 70,000 people can be tested each week, far more than the current demand, Walensky said. The government has also started a campaign to educate gay and bisexual doctors and men about the disease, he added.
