Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – After the Covid-19 pandemic that lasted for the past two years, a number of new diseases emerged. Now, there is a threat from a disease called monkeypox.
Citing CNBC International, monkeypox is usually most common in remote areas of central and western Africa. But last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the outbreak was spreading to non-endemic countries.
This disease is caused by a rare viral infection. Early symptoms if infected with monkeypox are fever, headache, swelling of the limbs, back pain, muscle aches, and lethargy.
After the fever reaches its peak and subsides, a rash or red rash on the skin appears and develops. Often, the rash starts on the face, then spreads to other parts of the body, most often the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
WHO did not specify which countries were affected. However, previously, transmission was confirmed in Italy, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, the United States (US), Canada, England, including Indonesia’s neighbor Australia.
In fact, the emergence of a number of new outbreaks has been warned by a number of parties. Including the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates.
In February 2022 it said the risk of severe illness from Covid-19 had been “dramatically reduced”. But another pandemic will surely emerge again.
Bill Gates revealed that the potential for a new pandemic would likely come from pathogens (viruses, bacteria, to fungi). In fact, it is different from the corona virus family.
“We will have another pandemic. It will be a different pathogen another time,” said Bill Gates, as quoted from the same page.
He added that the world should move faster in the future to develop and distribute vaccines. He asked the government to invest now.
“Next time, we have to try and make it, instead of two years we have to make it like six months,” said Bill Gates.
“The cost of preparing for the next pandemic is not so great. It’s not like climate change. If we are rational, yes, next time we will detect it earlier.”
