Monkeypox Cases in West Java: Updates and Response from Health Officials

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG — Spread of cases monkey pox or monkeypox in West Java continues to spread. Initially, only 2 cases of monkeypox were reported to the West Java Health Office. But now, five cases have been found in four districts and cities.

The five cases found were in Cirebon Regency, one person, one person in Cirebon City, one person in Bekasi, one person in Depok, and another person from Bandung City. However, monkey pox patients from Bandung City have gradually improved and been declared cured.

Responding to this, the Acting Governor of West Java, Bey Machmudin, said that the provincial Health Service together with the districts/cities were still looking for the source of the spread of this disease.

However, Bey confirmed that each regional hospital could carry out treatment first. So, there should be no rejection in monkey pox patients.

“Regarding the cause of monkeypox, we are still looking for it. The important thing is that all hospitals are ready and cannot refuse (monkeypox patients),” said Bey, Tuesday (14/11/2023).

Meanwhile, according to the Head of the West Java Health Office, Vini Adiana Dewi, additional cases occurred in the Cirebon area. New samples are reported to West Java Health Department some time ago. The patient is currently undergoing treatment at the local regional hospital.

“The confirmation has just come in, so if you recover, it feels like the Cirebon District Health Office hasn’t declared it cured yet, so it’s still being treated,” said Vini.

The handling of close contact tracing, said Vini, is still being carried out by the Cirebon Regency Health Office. Vini confirmed that later there would be the latest developments regarding the implementation of close patient contact. However, in general, tracking monkeypox patients is limited by information about the sufferer’s travel.

“Of the 5 cases that I read from the report, there were none, sorry, quote unquote, admitted, so yes, in this case, yesterday there was a suspect that yesterday he returned from Malaysia negative for chicken pox. So there is indeed a lot of chicken pox, right? he said.

Meanwhile, the Bandung City Health Office also had the same problem in tracing the close contacts of a monkey pox patient from Pasirlayung. Head of the Surveillance and Immunization Section of the Bandung City Health Service, Girindra Wardana, said that monkey pox patients were not open about their travel history.
