Monkey Pox Transmission: Droplets and Gravity Influence Spread of Monkey Pox

Jakarta, tvOnenews.com – Head of Infection Prevention and Control at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) Ari Prayitno said monkey pox or mpox can be transmitted between humans through droplets or splashes of saliva at close range of less than two meters or direct mouth contact.

“Of course droplets are still influenced by gravity so distance influences it,” said Ari in a webinar on monkey pox in Jakarta, Thursday (2/11/2023).

He emphasized that the transmission of monkey pox is not airborne or through small particles in the air.

Therefore, gravity also influences the potential for transmission of monkey pox, which is different if the disease can be transmitted airborne, which is not affected by gravity and its small particles can reach a distance of more than two meters.

“So if the droplets are below two meters, the risk is still there,” he said.

He added that transmission of mpox from animals to humans usually occurs through wounds, bites, scratches or close contact with monkeys or someone who consumes monkey meat, such as people in Africa.

Ari explained that treating someone infected with monkey pox can show the risks and complications of the symptoms that arise. For monkey pox with mild symptoms, just self-isolate.
