Monkey Pox Outbreak in Jakarta: Health Ministry Reports 59 Cases, 1 Death

Jakarta

The Indonesian Ministry of Health recorded a total of 59 cases of ‘Mpox’ monkey pox in Indonesia as of Sunday (26/11/2023), with 33 patients recovering and 1 patient dying. Now reports have emerged that one Mpox patient in Jakarta is in serious condition and is under close observation.

This was conveyed by the Head of the Communications and Public Services Bureau, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi. He explained that the patient with severe symptoms was a 28 year old man. The patient has a history of being HIV positive and has a bisexual sexual orientation.

“The patient (experienced) symptoms of a rash on 12 November after being isolated at a hospital. Then on 20 November he was referred for further treatment at Sulianti Hospital,” he explained when contacted detikcomSunday (26/11/2023).

“This is a positive HIV test result. He has been tested for immunity and is being treated for shortness of breath,” added Dr. Nadia.

Dr. Nadia also emphasized that risky sexual behavior is known to be one way of transmitting mpox. Previously, Indonesian Ministry of Health spokesperson Mohammad Syahril explained that many Mpox patients in many countries are men with gay sexual orientation. This encourages the government to carry out strict surveillance in these circles.

Even so, Syahril also emphasized that Mpox transmission cannot only occur in people with a sexual orientation of men who have sex with men (MSM). The reason is, transmission can occur outside of sexual activity. For example, through close contact with positive patients via droplets, or touching contaminated objects.

“This transmission is not just a sexual problem, other groups will also cause transmission, so of course we are monitoring it in general. Of course, this particular group is a concern, because the data in the world is like that,” explained Syahril some time ago.
