Monkey Pox Outbreak in Indonesia: Spread Continues to Increase, Minister of Health Reports

Two health workers socialize about monkey pox disease to the community. The Minister of Health said the spread of monkey pox in Indonesia continues to increase.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that the spread of monkey pox (Mpox) cases in Indonesia continues to increase. Budi said that the latest data from the Ministry of Health recorded that there had been 34 cases monkey pox spread across various regions.

“Lastly, there were 34 Mpox as of yesterday, the spread is increasing and there has been local transmission, many in Jakarta and yesterday it started spreading to Banten and Bandung,” said Budi Gunadi during a working meeting with Commission IX of the DPR, Tuesday (7/11/2023).

Budi Gunadi said that monkey pox outbreaks have actually increased in the world in the last year. However, at that time there was only one case in Indonesia which was an imported case from Singapore. Cases of monkey pox in Indonesia have been categorized as local transmission.

“In the world last year, this was an outbreak. What is now in Jakarta is local transmission, this disease is sensitive. Why? Because it occurs in a special segment, what we are discussing is (groups of men who have sex with men) MSM because their behavior changes,” said Budi Gunadi .

Budi Gunadi also highlighted the results of tracking reports regarding the increasing lifestyle of MSM, which is the cause of the increase monkey pox disease as well as HIV. Nevertheless, the Ministry of Health is moving to overcome the spread of monkey pox cases by providing treatment and vaccines.

“We just work quietly with social groups who are involved in this field, because we are afraid it will give a stigma so that the health intervention will be ineffective,” he said.

Meanwhile, the vaccine will be given to individuals who have been exposed to monkey pox. “We have prepared the vaccine, but for groups with special risk factors. And we also have antiviral medicine and we have provided it, and almost all of them have recovered and no one has died,” he said.
