Israel received on Wednesday the first shipment of monkeypox vaccines, made up of 5,600 doses that will be applied to men up to 42 years old who are HIV positive or take preventive medicines for HIV.
The arrival of the shipment was confirmed today by the Ministry of Health, which also anticipated that the arrival of some 5,000 more doses is expected in the coming days.
It is expected that these vaccines, acquired from the Swiss company Bavarian Nordic, will begin to be administered as of this weekend and through the main health mutuals in the country.
“Thousands of monkeypox vaccines landed in Israel. Another delivery on the way. The CEO of the vaccine manufacturer responded to my request and significantly increased the number of doses to Israel.”said today the Minister of Health, Nitzán Horowitz, through his Twitter account.
“We have also expanded the number of laboratories, formulated guidelines and the Health mutuals are prepared to vaccinate people with the highest risk of infection in the coming days”he added.
This week, Health sent the mutuals a precise list with the risk groups that should be prioritized in the vaccination process, which also includes those carriers of syphilis, chlamydia or gonorrhea.

Those who have been exposed to a carrier of the virus will also be considered for the vaccine, even if they are not part of a risk group.
People under 18 years of age will not be able to receive the vaccine.
So far, 121 people have been diagnosed with this disease in Israel, although it is believed that more people suffer from it without having identified it.
The arrival of the vaccines in Israel comes less than a week after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an international health emergency due to the outbreak of the disease, which totals more than 18,000 cases worldwide.
