Monkey pox: a confirmed death in Brazil, the state of emergency declared in New York… the virus continues to spread around the world

Brazilian health authorities confirmed on Friday the first death caused by monkeypox in the country.

According to the latest figures published by the country’s health authorities, Brazil had 978 positive cases of monkeypox on Wednesday July 27, most of them in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. An epidemic which also made a first victim in the country.

The recorded death is a 41-year-old man with severe immune problems. He had been admitted to the Eduardo de Menezes hospital in Belo Horizonte, according to the Brazilian newspaper “O Globo”.

The death comes as Spain also reported its first death from this virus. The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the first person to die of monkeypox in Spain was registered in the Valencian Community. A death that would have been caused by encephalitis associated with the infection but the case is still being analyzed to determine the final confirmation of the cause of death.

The governor said more than one in four cases of monkeypox in the US are in New York State, reaching nearly 1,400 reported cases. On Friday, Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York, declared a state of emergency in the face of the monkey pox epidemic.
