SENANDIKA.REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Health officials are currently monitoring the emergence of the Nipah virus, which is thought to be rare, but serious.
Indian authorities have carried out mass testing to stop the spread of the deadly Nipah virus, which has killed two people in the southern state of Kerala.
This is the fourth outbreak in the region since 2018. Bats are responsible for much of the disease’s spread due to their ability to travel long distances.
Nipah is a rare but serious virus that is transmitted by bats and can cause fever, vomiting and respiratory tract infections in humans. Severe cases can cause seizures and encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain that results in coma.
This virus has a fatality rate of between 40-75 percent, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). There is no known vaccine for this disease, and the usual treatment is to provide supportive care.
What is Nipah virus?
The first Nipah outbreak was recorded in 1998 after the virus spread among pig farmers in Malaysia and Singapore. The name of this virus is taken from the name of the village where the virus was discovered.
The disease can infect humans directly through contact with the body fluids of infected bats and pigs, with several cases of human-to-human transmission recorded.
