In Monistrol-sur-Loire, blood donation presents an overall encouraging report for 2021. Despite a difficult health context, 1,275 people pushed the door of the Capitelle to take part in one of the six collection days organized over the year. This is a hundred less than in 2020 (an additional collection was offered that year) and better than in 2019 (1,222 donors).
Relaunch promotional actions
“Given the period we have gone through, with a lot of contact and positive cases, it is rather interesting”, notes Claude Hivert, president of the friendly. “At the national level, the drop is significant. It’s very tense! You need at least 100,000 spare pouches. At the beginning of the year, we had fallen to 72,000. An appeal was launched by the French Blood Establishment. »
On the side of the Monistrolian team, the mobilization has not weakened. “We are 18 volunteers to organize the collections. It is satisfactory and sufficient insofar as the promotional actions do not take place (lottery, pétanque, visits to schools)”, develops the manager.
“We also hope that all these meetings can resume. This is essential to ensure the sustainability of the number of donors. »

59 new donors is not much
Precisely, if loyalty is recorded, the search for new donors has proven to be more complicated. With a major reason: the lack of collection in high schools. “We had 59 first-time donors. This is a significant drop from what we usually record. We hope that the health context will allow us to resume operations with high school students. They are the most important source of news”, insists Claude Hivert.

A collection on March 21
The next collection will take place on March 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. then from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Capitelle. “During the pandemic, the EFS set up an online appointment system to streamline and limit the wait, but you should not hesitate to come, even if you were unable to make an appointment. There is room for everyone and the needs are great,” says Claude Hivert.
“Each year, a million patients are cared for thanks to blood donation. Every day, 10,000 donations are needed to meet the needs, ”explains on the side of the EFS. “47% of transfused patients have cancer or a blood disease. 35% of transfusions are performed during surgery. 32% of transfusions occur during relative emergencies and 12% during vital emergencies. »
Donation is authorized for men and women between the ages of 18 and 70 who weigh more than 50 kg and who are deemed fit following the pre-donation interview. Men can donate up to 6 times a year and women up to 4 times. Between two blood donations, a minimum period of 8 weeks must be respected. After age 60, the first donation is subject to the assessment of an EFS doctor.
Reminder: above all, do not come on an empty stomach on the day of the collection.
