Monique van de Ven on the relationship with her mother: “Something clicked in me during a premiere”

Monique explains in the magazine that she and her mother Puck are very similar. This is how they embrace everything she comes across and always make the best of it. “From her I learned to live life to the fullest,” the actress said. But having a strong and dominant mother also has a disadvantage. She explains, “My sister and I were charged from a young age to be her comfort women.”

The first roles that Monique takes at the beginning of her acting career have only one goal: to make her mother happy. But her mother seems to have no eye for her work.

When Monique takes her to the movie premiere Romeo in 1990 – in which her heart and soul are involved – and her mother afterward just asks if there’s coffee, something clicks in the actress. “His her inability to compliment me or talk about my emotions broke me then,” she says. “Suddenly I saw that it was actually always about her pain.”

Only in the last days of his life does he become vulnerable, according to Monique. “She hugged me and was all there for me. I will cherish that gift, along with the lessons I learned from her and the DNA I received, for the rest of my life.”
