Monica Bellucci’s best series and films before ‘Beetlejuice 2’

Monica Bellucci has been everything she wanted and more. The Italian, who was initially willing to be a lawyer, was given the opportunity to pursue a career in modelling very early in her life. From there, one thing led to another and she also tried her luck in acting, a discipline in which she was also quite good. Monica Bellucci, in addition to being one of the sex symbols of her time, emerged as a great actress capable of playing very different roles. She was Cleopatra, Mary Magdalene, a computer program and even a Bond girl. Her first roles were minor ones, such as the one she had in ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ (1992) by Francis Ford Coppola. In the 2000s she began to be the protagonist of her films and gain notoriety until today, when she appears in ‘Beetlejuice 2’. That is why we are going to review some of the best series and films in which Monica Bellucci has acted.

‘Malena’ (2000)

  • Director: Giuseppe Tornatore
  • Duration: 109 minutes (European version)
  • It can be rented on Rakuten TV and Amazon Prime Video

‘Malèna’ was one of Monica Bellucci’s first leading roles and the springboard for bigger projects. She plays a young Italian woman during World War II whose husband is fighting on the African Front. A group of children from the town, due to her great beauty, begin to spy on her. Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore (‘Cinema Paradiso’).

‘The Passion of the Christ’ (2004)

  • Director: Mel Gibson
  • Duration: 122 minutes
  • You can watch it on YouTube

‘The Passion of the Christ’ is considered one of the most controversial films of recent years. It is based on the New Testament evangelical episodes of the same name and features Jim Caviezel (‘The Thin Red Line’, ‘Sound of Freedom’) as Jesus and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. It is the highest-grossing Christian film in history, surpassing others such as ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ or ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’.

‘Matrix Reloaded’ y ‘Matrix Revolutions’ (2003)

  • Directed by: Wachowski Sisters
  • Duration: 138 minutes and 129 minutes
  • You can see them in Max

These two films, sequels to the original ‘Matrix’, were both released in 2003 and starred Monica Bellucci as Persephone. The films go beyond the first one, continuing to confuse viewers with the imagery and philosophical undertones of the plot.

‘Irreversible’ (2002)

  • Directed by: Gaspar Noe
  • Duration: 97 minutes
  • It can be seen on Amazon Prime Video through a premium subscription

If The Passion of the Christ created controversy, Irreversible is another level. This film, told in reverse, follows two Parisian friends who seek to avenge the terrible rape of one of their girlfriends. The film sparked controversy for the rape scene itself, which is explicitly violent and long. Gaspar Noé has been criticized for using gratuitous violence that does not help the film and only seeks to make the viewer uncomfortable. Even so, Irreversible has its defenders.
