September 23, 2024, 5 p.m., Mommsenstr. 13, 23843 Bad Oldesloe
On September 23, 2024 at 5 p.m., the exhibition “Money on the move. From the money cat to the smartwatch” will open its doors for the first time in the Stormarnhaus at Mommsenstrasse 13 in Bad Oldesloe.
The exhibition is located in the foyer of the district council meeting room and in the basement of the building.
After a welcome by Dr. Henning Görtz, District Administrator of the Stormarn District, Silke Boldt, Board Member of Sparkasse Holstein and Prof. Dr. Axel E. Walter, Director of the Eutin State Library, Dr. Winfried Siebers gives an introduction to the exhibition concept.
Afterwards there will be an opportunity to take a tour of the exhibition and discuss the contents over a glass of water or juice and small snacks.
Visitors can expect interesting facts and exhibits, as travelers have always been concerned with money issues. While today it is quite normal to pay without cash, the financial arrangements used to be much more complicated.
In Europe alone, there was an almost unfathomable variety of currency zones, coin systems and other means of payment until the 19th century. Anyone who travelled and wanted to have liquidity on the way not only had to take money with them, but also had to be prepared to frequently exchange money and change coins.
The exhibition shows the most important aspects of money supply when travelling from the late Middle Ages to the present day. It becomes clear how not only travel behaviour itself changed over the period of 750 years, but also what contemporary payment transactions this entailed.
Curated by Dr. Winfried Siebers on behalf of the Eutin State Library, this cultural-historical contribution is being shown on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Sparkasse Holstein and is being largely supported by the Sparkasse Holstein foundations. The exhibition will remain in Bad Oldesloe until October 26, 2024.
Almost simultaneously with the launch in Bad Oldesloe, the opening will take place on October 1, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at the main branch of Sparkasse Holstein, Am Rosengarten 3 in Eutin. At both locations there will be a varied accompanying program that includes not only scientific lectures and guided tours, but also workshops for schoolchildren.
Admission to the exhibition and the opening event is free. For more information on the accompanying programme, see www.lb-eutin.de .
