Seventy-two-year-old Vieira was detained over deals worth more than 100 million euros, which could have caused heavy damage to the state and several companies since 2014. Along with him, three other people are being investigated as part of Operation Red Card, and the club is not a suspect.

Vieira, who has led Benfica since 2003 and was re-elected last year, dismissed the charges after being detained and resigned temporarily. Now, according to the Portuguese media, he has definitely resigned. He was replaced at the head of the Lisbon Club by former Portuguese representative and current vice president of Benfica Rui Costa.
