Money saving expert, Martin Lewis, is warning Irish households in the midst of a cost of living crisis that opting for an air fryer or microwave instead of an oven may not always be the cheapest option. While in some cases these kitchen appliances may save on energy costs, Lewis recommends thinking carefully before making the switch as sometimes using an oven can be more economical. Lewis highlights that the cost comes down to an equation of what uses more energy. For example, while a microwave provides consistent heat, an oven requires preheating and heating up to full temperature before use. The wattage of an appliance has to be found, and the electricity cost for its use determined before deciding between these kitchen appliances. The advice applies to air fryers, halogen cookers, and other cooking appliances designed to minimise energy consumption, especially when cooking large quantities. While some research shows air fryers could be a cost-effective option, Lewis believes larger meals may cost more in electricity, suggesting ovens are still the better choice for cooking large quantities.
